Variety of Sound releases FlavourMTC, a freeware passive equalizer effect in VST plugin format for Windows.
FlavourMTC is a transparent passive equalizer with an output amplifier stage. The acronym MTC stands for “Mixbus Tone Control,” indicating that the plugin is intended for use on stereo buses and the master channel.
According to Variety of Sound, the plugin “follows classic passive equalizer designs where the EQ circuits are not able to amplify signals, but a dedicated amplifier stage takes care of it.”
The idea here is to have a transparent equalizer with gentle curves that are suitable for adjusting the frequency balance. The output amplifier is then used to add some subtle coloration if needed.
FlavourMTC lets you calibrate the output amplifier to match your mixing levels. The output stage will glue the mix together and apply an analog console-like flavor to the signal if used correctly.
It’s also worth noting that FlavourMTC utilizes internal oversampling to avoid digital artifacts and ensure good sound quality.
The interface features a low-cut knob (20, 30, or 50 Hz), a pair of high-frequency and low-frequency shelving filters, and a bell-type cut-only filter to remove muddiness in the midrange (150, 250, or 400 Hz).
The output section features a volume control knob and a switch to turn the saturation stage on or off. You can choose one of the preset reference points when turning on the saturation module.
If you’d like to use FlavourMTC as a transparent EQ, simply leave the nonlinear processing switched off. This will reduce the plugin’s CPU consumption by roughly two-thirds.
On the other hand, if you want to take advantage of FlavourMTC’s saturation capabilities, be sure to read the included user manual. It provides some insight into how the saturation stage works and tips on getting the best results.
Variety of Sound is one of the legendary old-school freeware VST plugin developers, providing top-tier audio software that easily rivals the quality of paid plugins. Their incredible FerricTDS mkII is still my favorite tape saturation plugin.
If you’re looking for mixing and mastering software with a taste of analog hardware, I highly recommend checking out Variety of Sound’s plugins. It is one of the best freeware plugin collections for Windows-based music producers.
FlavourMTC is available in VST2 plugin format for 32-bit and 64-bit digital audio workstations on Windows. macOS plugin hosts are not supported at the moment.
